One of the most common topics that we talk about with our patient families is the products available to keep kids mouths happy and healthy. For convenience sake, you can purchase all these products at the link provided to Amazon, or oftentimes they can be purchased at the local drugstore or big box store (Target, Costco, etc). Some of the products are even available in our office. Here are some of our favorites and why we like them:

A toothbrush is one the most important tools to keep your child’s teeth sparkling clean. The key thing to remember is to purchase a brush with soft bristles and brush the teeth with firm but not hard pressure. Don’t forget though, your child will receive a toothbrush when they come in for their periodic cleaning and examination!
Colgate Extra Clean Toothbrush, Full Head, Soft, 6 Count
Many parents choose an electric toothbrush to help clean their child’s teeth. Remember, in theory, you should be able to brush just as well with a manual brush. Electric brushes have the potential to make it easier to do a thorough job with brushing. Keeping this in mind, there are a lot of electric toothbrushes that don’t work as well, so try to stick with the recommended types.

Traditional floss will always be the gold standard for making sure the space between your teeth are free of plaque. Make sure to curve the floss to make a “C” shape against your tooth!

If you have braces, you may need a floss threader to get the floss under the wires:
Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Threader Floss 30 Count
Understandably, using “normal” floss to floss your child’s teeth can be difficult so a lot of parents choose flossers that have handles to do the task. These are not ideal since the “C” shape is difficult to recreate but is often times a worthy compromise to get the job done.

There are a LOT of toothpaste options for you to choose from. For the youngest kids, the biggest question is when to start with a toothpaste with fluoride. The current recommendations for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) suggest using a small smear of fluoridated toothpaste up until the age of 3. Afterward, a pea size amount of toothpaste should be plenty. If you have any concerns regarding the effectiveness of fluoride, make sure to bring this up with the dentist so that all questions are addressed.
It is not uncommon for younger kids to be particular about the taste of their toothpaste. You may have to try different types until your child likes one.

Oftentimes we recommend MI Paste to help remineralize teeth in our patients with the highest risk of decay. While not used like a traditional toothpaste, it can be very useful in addition to the normally recommended routine of brushing & flossing.
Fluoride rinses are a great way to help prevent cavities before they start as well as keeping those very small “beginning” cavities from getting bigger. The only precaution is that we want to make sure that your child can fully spit out the rinse and toothpaste. Excessive swallowing can cause the developing permanent teeth to stain before they grow in.

Sometimes it can be hard to determine if your child is effectively brushing and removing all the plaque that has adhered to the teeth. Disclosing tablets can be used before brushing to help guide the cleaning process or after brushing as a “pop quiz” to show if the brushing was significant.
