Kids and Cavities

Posted .

Kids and cavities seem to go together like . . . well, like kids and candy, right? In all seriousness, it’s hard to prevent cavities in your kids’ teeth. From keeping your kids on a good oral health routine to making sure they don’t eat too much candy, it can be an uphill battle at times.

That’s where we come in. Working in pediatric dentistry has given us unique insight into how to help kids understand the importance of cavity prevention. Let’s take a look at a few tips we have on helping your kids avoid cavities:

Make brushing fun
If you can find a way to make brushing teeth fun, your kids can get excited to brush their teeth every morning and night. The trick, of course, is figuring out how to brushing teeth fun. One thing you could do is give out awards for the child who has the cleanest teeth, or who has the longest streak of brushing without being reminded by mom or dad.

Teach them to floss
Once your kids are old enough, you’ll also want to teach them how to floss. This is a great way to help prevent cavities, and there are ways to make this fun as well. One option is using different kinds of floss, such as those that are emblazoned with cartoon characters. This can be a great way to help you make flossing fun for your kids.

It’s important that you also make sure that you’re brushing and flossing your teeth, too. Kids learn by example, so if you set a good one for maintaining good oral health, your kids are more likely to follow suit.
