Sometimes, it is difficult to know what to do to help your child learn good oral hygiene habits. Simply setting a timer and supervising can be a dreary task for all involved. Here are some ways to make sure your child’s oral hygiene is a good experience all around.
First, remember that toothbrushes need to be replaced every 3-4 months, or sooner if they are frayed, worn, or contaminated. When shopping for oral hygiene products, we recommend choosing fluoride toothpaste and soft-bristled child-sized toothbrushes. Look for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance to guarantee you are getting a product that is up to snuff. Fluoride toothpastes come in many fun colors and flavors, and some even have sparkles in them! Many beloved children’s characters have found their way onto ADA-approved toothbrushes as well. Try letting your child choose a new character to come along on their brushing adventure.
Speaking of coming along on the adventure, try transforming toothbrush time into family time! Brushing teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day, plus flossing once a day for 2-3 minutes each session, gives you approximately 3 extra hours per month to spend with your child. Make your children happy as best you can by staying calm, cheerful, and focused on the needs of your child. Brush along with your child so they can see your good habits. Instruct them as you go. Remember that if you choose to use mouthwash, it is NOT recommended for children under 6 years old. Also, don’t be surprised if children need help flossing even after they are brushing on their own. It takes a while to get the proper motor skills required for good flossing techniques.
